How to stay healthy this season with Chinese Medicine

Oftentimes the older, more traditional method is simpler and more natural.

Today’s blog post is brought to you by the common cold, as I sit here at my kitchen table (in my pj’s, on a Tuesday)  wishing I was not sick and definitely surrounded by the mountain of tissues and cups of tea I see around me I am filled with ideas to share with you on how to stay healthy.  It is however the season for sniffles and sore throats when we stock up on tea, lozenges, cold and flu medicine, but how do we know that these investments are healthy, safe to take, or even going to make a difference?  These are important questions, especially during pregnancy, when the immune systems are working extra hard to keep us at peak performance!  Below are some great ideas to consider if you find yourself in the same position as me this season.

You probably already know that I’m going to tell you acupuncture is a great way to stimulate and promote a healthy immune system, and it is!  it is also a great way to shorten the duration of a cold or the flu.  This is especially true when caught at the very first sign of symptoms like runny nose, cough, sore throat, HA, itchy eyes, fever, chills, should I go on. . . acupuncture can stop it from fully developing at all!  Did you also know that women are more likely to get sick right before and during our period.

Chinese herbs can also be very beneficial for warding off a cold at the first signs of symptoms as well.  But how about if you’re caught off guard and wake up all of a sudden to feeling lousy, how can you make sure it doesn’t take you down especially right before the holiday season!  Lots of adequate rest, plenty of fluids, a good multi vitamin on a regular basis, a diet full of vibrant colors and whole healthy foods are the obvious ones.  Some not so obvious ideas include moxibustion at home, trying a nette pot, a steam bath, or sipping on congee.

It’s also important to remember to stay warm, wear socks or slippers, wear a scarf or make sure to keep the back of your neck covered when in drafty spaces or outside on a windy day.  In Chinese medicine there is a specific acupuncture point located at the base of your neck on your back; this is a very important point and when left uncovered while outdoors on a windy day can leave you more susceptible to getting sick or catching a cold.  Remember how your mother always told you “don’t go outside with wet hair or you will get sick,” well it’s sort of like that.  When we leave our bodies susceptible to the cold or wind, or when we are run down our pores are open and resistance is lower allowing the wind and cold to come into our bodies and make us sick.  This can lead to those nasty symptoms listed above.

Moxibustion is a terrific thing that can be done at home and is safe during pregnancy when there are signs of a common cold or flu.  Moxa comes from the herb mugwort, known as Ai Ye in Chinese medicine.  There are many forms of moxa, but for home use the smokeless moxa is the best option; it is used to create a warming sensation and deeply penetrate warmth into the body and can be used on specific acupuncture points.  My favorite point to use moxa for immune function is St-36.

You can find a great moxibustion instruction sheet right here 3-guidelines-for-using-moxa

Important things to remember when using moxa at home, NEVER touch the skin directly!  It can be applied 5 to 7 minutes at the point above until it feels very warm, never to the point of painfully hot.

I hope you find these ideas as helpful as I do when I’m stuck at home with a cold!  Here’s to a healthy and happy holiday season!

We can support your IVF experience

Let Asheville’s Sacred Valley Acupuncture Support Your IVF Experience

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex process, and many couples turning to it are understandably anxious about their prospects for biological parenthood. There are many procedures involved, and often high financial costs, with no guarantee that the treatment will result in successful conception. And yet, focusing on the anxiety triggered by these risks is not healthy or helpful, and can even reduce your chances of becoming pregnant with IVF—in fact, women pursuing conception, with or without fertility treatment, are advised to reduce their stress as much as possible.

Fortunately, there’s great news! Acupuncture treatments have been shown to increase the chances of successful IVF conception by up to 65%, according to one meta-analysis of several clinical trials. One single British study found that acupuncture during the course of IVF nearly doubled pregnancy rates when compared to those who underwent IVF without acupuncture.

There are two main causes thought to be behind these success rates. One is that acupuncture does reduce stress, providing a calming and relaxing experience that has lasting benefits for patients no matter what they may be seeking treatment for. But more specifically significant for women undergoing IVF is the finding that targeted acupuncture increases uterine blood flow, which is thought to help facilitate implantation of the embryo.

To enhance your chances for IVF success, schedule your acupuncture treatment on or as close as possible to the day of your embryo transfer. For best results, establish yourself as a client well in advance, so we can better tailor your treatments to your individual needs. By working in tandem with your IVF cycle, and providing a sanctuary environment for your comfort and relaxation, Asheville’s Sacred Valley Acupuncture is ready to walk with you on your journey to motherhood!

October News [A time of Change]

October is a time of change. It is also my favorite time of year! As we ease into fall and the days make the shift away from the warmth of the summer sun I am eager to watch the leaves turn color, I long to sip on hot apple cider with a scarf around my neck and eventually the opportunity to sit around a crackling fire.

If you wanna hear about the changes at SVA check out the bottom of the newsletter. 😉

All of these seasonal things we look forward to also comes with a bit of dread as our immune systems may weaken and cold and flu season is upon us too. This year I urge you to consider getting an acupuncture session instead of the flu shot. Acupuncture in the fall is great time to tune up your system. It can support your immune system by nourishing your body’s resources of blood, and qi. Boosting your Wei Qi in Chinese Medicine is your defense qi that helps fight illness.

I’m Kerry Goodwin, licensed acupuncturist and certified Chinese herbalist specializing in the treatment of women’s health, fertility, prenatal and postpartum care, gastrointestinal and autoimmune disorders, food sensitivities, nutritional counseling, and mental health. My goal is to provide the highest level of care and compassion to my patients. I believe in looking at the body and person as a whole, not merely a series of symptoms. My background as a professional ballet dancer taught me to connect and listen to my body and I hope to bring that same body awareness to my patients through the use of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, moxibustion, cupping, nutrition, and body work.

As a practitioner my priority is to hold a safe and healing space for patients seeking optimal health and balance in their lives no matter where you are in your journey toward health and wholeness. I absolutely love connecting with my patients and bringing the medicine to as many people in my community as I can. During treatments I spend the majority of the time with my patients using additional modalities and I tailor each treatment to the specific needs each time.

My husband and I are thrilled to begin exploring all that Asheville and the surrounding area has to offer. We have lived in Portland, OR for the last five years where I received my Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. After graduating I opened Alignment Acupuncture in Portland and also taught ballet barre classes at Mod Physique. But the pull of being closer to family and new opportunities drew us East. Whether we are on the west coast or the east coast, we enjoy camping, spending time outdoors, exploring our city, and cooking with friends and family.

Pregnancy Loss and Acupuncture

October – Pregnancy Loss and Acupuncture

October is nationally recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The loss of a baby in utero or at term is devastating and causes both physical and mental repercussions. Acupuncture can be used as a healing modality to help women through this difficult time.

Just as acupuncture can help a woman sustain a healthy pregnancy, keep her energy levels up, and common discomforts such as sore muscles and nausea at bay, acupuncture can also be a healing tool in the event of miscarriage or infant death. Acupuncture can help release a woman’s grief and calm the heart and spirit. It can calm the nervous system so she can slowly and thoughtful come to terms with the loss and being to process what has happened.

In the case of fetal demise or when carrying the baby to term is not possible or in the case of miscarriage acupuncture can help to release the fetal tissues and decrease the need for a D & C.

When a woman has miscarried acupuncture treatments can help to heal the uterus, heal the spirit, and help the woman cope with her loss.

Additionally combining acupuncture treatments with herbal supplements the body can be begin to rest, reset, and start the healing process and prepare for conception, if that is the desired goal, yet again.

September Newsletter

A few weeks ago I had the honor of being a guest on Dr. Bob Hanna’s local radio show, Living Well. I had a delightful time despite feeling nervous about speaking live on the radio. Dr. Hanna is a wonderful person and offers a lot of services to our beloved community such as couples counseling and parent coaching. You can listen to the show online.

Throughout the hour-long interview Dr. Hanna asked me all sorts of questions about my work, my passion for treating pregnant women, and the integrative approach I take to healing. We discussed the roots of Sacred Valley Acupuncture and how I came up with the name for my practice. After I completed my studies I took a life-changing trip to the Andes Mountains in Peru where I felt my spirit and soul healed. Being among the native Pisac people, their deep reverence and respect for the natural world, and their steady and soulful pace of life; I knew I wanted to create a bridge between that experience and my practice here in Asheville. My intention in naming my practice Sacred Valley Acupuncture was to acknowledge that Asheville is also a sacred valley – full of beauty and healing just as it is in Peru. I want the healing to begin as you as you enter the space. I’ll never forget how it felt to be surrounded by the Andes Mountains. The feeling of spirit and something greater than me was so prevalent and undeniable and I hope my patients feel the same thing when they come for treatment.

Did you know? You don’t have to be sick to benefit from acupuncture!

Did you know? You don’t have to be sick to benefit from acupuncture!

Most people first come to acupuncture for treatment of a specific health condition, often after having no success with conventional medicine. This is a fortunate circumstance, because it opens them up a whole new healing modality that they can take advantage of for just about any health issue from now on. But you don’t have to have anything “wrong” with you in order for acupuncture treatments to be good for your well-being! Beyond restoring your body to its natural balance from an acute condition, regular acupuncture is also an excellent part of maintaining good health, because it functions as preventive care.

We all know that prevention is the “best medicine” in terms of our overall health. Exercise, healthy eating, stress management, etc. are key components to general health and longevity, and regular checkups with your primary care provider can help detect some problems at early stages. But alternative healing methods like acupuncture also help prevent dis-ease. Many people make regular visits to their chiropractor and/or their massage therapist to keep their spinal, muscular, and/or lymphatic health in optimal form. Regular acupuncture can be a very beneficial addition to your preventive care plan.

Acupuncturists often call these preventive visits “maintenance tune-ups.” Just as your car needs its tires rotated, its oil changed, and its air filters replaced periodically, your body “runs better” when you get regular energetic adjustments. The benefits of these treatments include improved energy, metabolism, and blood circulation, strengthened immunity to diseases, deeper sleep, relief from stress, regulated digestion and menstrual cycles, decreased general “aches and pains,” and better focus and performance in all activities. In short, people who visit their acupuncturist regularly just feel better all-around!

Furthermore, subtle imbalances may be spotted and corrected before the imbalance turns into a larger issue. Acupuncturists are often able to see these energetic processes long before any symptoms develop, reducing your chances of having to spend time and money on conventional medicine down the road. And if you’ve been experiencing any changes or minor issues in between visits, we can discuss them and tailor your treatment accordingly.

How often should you come in for a regular tune-up? The answer varies from person to person. Some benefit most from monthly treatments, while others might come in every three to six months. Seasonal changes are a great time to come in and help your body deal with adjusting to warmer or colder temperatures, changes in daylight patterns, and any allergens that may be coming into bloom. If you deal with chronic issues that tend to recur, such as headaches or back pain, you can get out ahead of flare-ups with maintenance tune-ups. If you feel like you’re “coming down with something,” are dealing with a stressful life change such as moving or starting a new job, or are just experiencing lower energy levels than usual, these are also good reasons to schedule an appointment.

Ancients healers believed that staying well, rather than “getting better,” was the primary function of Chinese medicine, and encouraged their patients to take the same approach. Waiting until one was sick to visit their acupuncturist was seen as waiting far too long. In modern times, this is what the preventive care philosophy is all about. So if you’re feeling healthy right now, schedule an appointment in order to keep feeling your best! The cumulative effects of regular acupuncture treatments can truly last a lifetime.

Why Acupuncture Is Not a One-Time Thing

Why Acupuncture Is Not a One-Time Thing

Have you noticed that life just seems to move faster and faster? For all of the technological developments over the decades that were supposed to free up more of our time, we often feel busier and busier. Unfortunately, this can take a toll on our health. We may feel too pressed for time to get enough sleep or make nutritious meals. We may also be reluctant to devote more than an hour or two to resolving a health issue. After all, conventional medicine most often involves one visit to the doctor and a prescription medication to make our symptoms go away. But in reality, deep healing happens on the body’s own schedule, regardless of how busy we may perceive ourselves to be.

Acupuncture can help restore your body to its natural state of balance in ways that conventional medicine cannot. But it almost never happens all in one session. While a single treatment can provide healing relaxation, and you may even experience some improvement, the underlying causes of most conditions take longer to resolve. In fact, a typical course of treatment ranges from 6 to 15 visits… sometimes longer, depending on what you’re seeking help with and the length of time you have had the issue being treated.

It’s ideal to come in at least once a week for the first few sessions, to build momentum in the healing process. Once the treatment is clearly taking hold, the remaining visits may be spaced further apart, typically to once every two weeks to once a month. It’s important to follow through with the full course of treatment, just as if you were taking a round of antibiotics. In both cases, it can be tempting to stop once we’re feeling better, but in terms of what our bodies need, there’s more work to do.

Of course, you don’t have to have an acute condition to benefit from regular acupuncture. People dealing with recurring issues like allergies, chronic pain and migraines experience significant improvement from regular treatments. Women see relief of symptoms related to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause. And regardless of whether you’re experiencing any issues at all, coming in for periodic “tune-ups” allows your body to reset for optimal functioning, including improved metabolism, digestion, and sleep. This preventive step helps you stay in balance and reduce your likelihood of developing health issues in the future.

For me, the best part about seeing you regularly is the relationship we build together, which facilitates your healing in the most efficient and effective way possible. As I get to know you, we can try different methods, adjusting treatments as we learn what works best for your body. Regular visits result in truly individualized care, in a supportive and peaceful environment.

Meditation teachers often say that the busier you are, the more time you need to spend meditating. The regular relaxation of your mind allows you to approach your daily tasks with less resistance and stress. Acupuncture treatment is also a meditative, relaxing experience that allows your body, mind and spirit come back into balance. No matter how busy you are, the time you spend here will be well worth it.
